Budapest. It never meant much to me before – it makes me think of the George Ezra song. But what a place!
Asa and I decided to go here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. It is such a vibrant city! We went for 5 days and I will definitely return. If you like history, architecture, food and anything lively then GO to Budapest. It was incredible for photography. I particularly loved photographing the intricate buildings and chain bridges! They make for some cool photos that I will one day get printed for my living room! (:
The city is either side of the River Danube, the second largest river in Europe and there is so much to do. The first couple of days we were mulling around, getting our bearings. I think on day 2 we walked over 15 miles (my poor feet) but the views were so worth it! On one side of the river you can climb up the mountainside and see so much of Budapest as a whole. It was mesmerising to be honest. The walk was well worth it.
HISTORY
There is so much history. One day, when it was chucking it down all day and we couldn’t see across the river, we went to a museum that is built into a cave and used to be a hospital! It’s called the Hospital in the Rock. The guide took us through all these twisted cave systems and as some of you know I work at the hospital in Peterborough as well, and it was very interesting to compare to a modern day hospital. It was used during the world war and soviet revolutions. It was top secret government property until 2002! Crazy…anyway, ignoring my inner geek for a moment, the weather did perk up later in the week – which was fab. We made the most of it too.
THERMAL BATHS
On the Wednesday, as our feet were tired, we went to the thermal baths; specifically, the Szechenyi Thermal Bath. It is the largest medicinal bath in Europe and the water is supplied by two thermal springs. It was so nice on our achy legs. The hottest bath was over 30 degrees. It was definitely just what the doctor ordered! Of course I took some photos! My favourite one was actually taken on my iPhone 7 Plus of Asa under one of the waterfalls.
MARGARET ISLAND
We also visited Margaret Island which is an island in the middle of the river Danube. It took us a while to walk there but we walked along the river and over the bridge that juts out to the island. It is so beautiful; a tranquil, green and refreshing getaway in a very busy city. It reminded me of central park. We just sat and watched the fountains and rested for a while. There were also beautiful Japanese gardens, winding walks and picturesque views of the skyline. I would definitely recommend visiting this part of Budapest if you can!
FOOD
If you are a food-lover like me, then you’ll understand that holidays include a lot of food! The
Budapest dish is called Goulash. Honestly, I really wanted to be cultured and just try it but it kind of reminds me of stew and I just didn’t…. oh well. I will next time!
So, as you can tell, I liked the Hungarian Capital. Here are some of my favourite photos I took throughout the week. Let me know what you think below and sign up to hear more from me, whether its travel, trying new things or my photography work! I like to keep it varied!
