My First Experience With Smoke Grenades | Baby Gender Reveal | Cambridgeshire | Family Sessions

Wow. What can I say?! This photo session was unreal. A friend is expecting her second baby – amazing news – and she asked if I would do some gender reveal photos for her and her growing family as they wanted to find out the gender of their baby prior to the birth. To be honest, I had seen a couple of posts on Instagram where balloons or confetti have been used to reveal the gender etc. but Holly wanted something slightly more adventurous. She wanted to use a smoke grenade to reveal whether her baby is a boy or girl.

A Few Tips

I have never used anything like this before so after some research we decided to use the wire pull smoke grenades from Enola Gaye. They last for about 40-90 seconds and smoke billows out of both sides. They come in all sorts of colours, so in theory could work for so many occasions, and they’re so simple to use! The plan was, Sam and Holly were going to find out the gender of their baby and then we were going to use either the blue or pink grenade to document the moment they found out if baby is a boy or a girl! Eeeek.

In all honesty, I was kind of nervous but we had a couple of the coloured flares in case the first one went wrong! I think it went so well. I dragged my poor husband along to the photo session – my very willing assistant – so he could help with the flares. A word of warning, hold the flare horizontally so you don’t burn your arm like Asa did…*face palm*

So we did a few photos with the scan photo, and Holly had bought a banner saying “He or She” which added beautifully to our photos. I do love the use of props in things like this – they really help to capture the story of this momentous occasion completely.

As it turns out, they are having a baby boy – which meant our photo shoot turned out beautifully blue. Asa set off the flare with Mummy, Daddy and Baby Roman together in the middle and he ran it around them. It did make Roman a little scared though as the smoke is quite sudden, so we tried it a couple of times – and I absolutely fell in love with the results!

I picked my favourites to you show you below – leave a comment to let me know what you think of them.

I will most definitely be using these again. The reason why I liked them so much is that I know each photo session these I use these in will create delightfully unique photos!
