8 Tips on What to Wear for your Family Photos | Calton Photography

Fashion advice from a photographer? Really? Nope, I'm not here for that..just a few things to consider before your photo session that may help you decide what to wear if you're a little unsure.

Co-ordinate

Co-ordination is key if you want your photos to look smart and consistent. This doesn’t mean matching necessarily. You and your children wouldn’t necessarily wear the exact same clothes each day, however if you wear colours that do not vastly clash or co-ordinated colours yet similar styles then this works really well!

Be comfortable

Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in! You want your photos to reflect you feeling happy and relaxed. So put on your favourite jeans or a comfortable shirt. Whatever makes you feel relaxed in front of a camera then that’s absolutely perfect for this type of photo session.

Consider your home décor.

Think about where you are going to be putting these photos once you’ve got them printed. Will they be in your neutral coloured living room? Or maybe in your vibrant kitchen? Consider clothes that will compliment these colours in your own home so you can add them to the walls and they’ll just slot in like part of the furniture.

Plan ahead

The sooner you sort out outfits the less stressed you will be prior to the day! Especially if you are having to think of your little ones as well as yourself.

Keep your location in mind

This is important. For example, if your photo shoot is in a plain green meadow, perhaps stray from wearing too much green as you may camouflaging yourself! If you are having your photos taken in a studio, try to avoid wearing the same colour clothing as the backdrop. If so you may end up looking like just a floating head in the final photos!

Practicality

A lot of the family photo sessions I do are outdoors, so if we’re going for a walk then perhaps consider practical footwear. One family group I had the pleasure of photographing wore co-ordinated converse, it worked really well.

Accessories add texture and variation. Spice up your outfit

Accessories are a great way to break up plain clothing and therefore add a nice subtle variation in each photo. It could be a tie, a belt, a scarf – obviously depending on the weather at the time of your photos and the look you are going for – but these accessories can also aid the style of your “poses”. For example: a wife could hold a husbands tie or be ‘putting on’ their little girl’s hat etc.

Let your personality stand out

At the end of the day, these photos are going to be something you’ll want to keep forever as they are to represent you at that stage in your life. So why not let your personality shine through?! After all, the best photos are the ones that are natural, informal and that represent your family in a real way.
